DONATING FROM YOUR IRA
A tax-free gift from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a great way to support Amigos de Animales continued mission to reduce the suffering of cats and dogs in San Miguel de Allende while also minimizing your tax bill for 2022 and 2023. It can also qualify as part of your required minimum distribution.
How tax-free gifts from IRAs work
- If you’re age 70 1/2 or older, you can make a qualified charitable distribution (up to $100,000, annual aggregate limit) from your IRA directly to Amigos de Animales. This is known as a qualified charitable distribution. If you’re older than age 72, the distribution will count towards your required minimum distribution.
- There is no tax deduction, but the amount you send directly to us from your IRA is excluded from your income for federal tax purposes and you pay no income tax on this amount.
- The entire amount transferred supports Amigos de Animales immediately.
- You can also donate an IRA to Amigos de Animales upon your death.
- Neither you and your heirs nor your estate will pay income taxes on the distribution of the assets to Amigos de Animales.
- Your estate will need to include the value of the assets as part of the gross estate but will receive a tax deduction for the charitable contribution, which can be used to offset the estate taxes.
- Because qualified charities do not pay income tax, the full amount of your retirement account will directly benefit Amigos de Animales.
